The Hidrate Spark Smart Bottle is a great concept but comes up dry. About two months ago I received my Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle. Frankly I had forgotten I had ordered one perhaps six months earlier. The Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle uses Bluetooth technology to check your water consumption throughout your day. Now I know what you are already thinking, “Can’t you just remember how much water you’re drinking?” Well yes, but I always forget how many ounces I should be drinking. However, by utilizing my Hidrate Spark Water Bottle, the tracking process, when it works, is simple and for me, what’s more important is the water consumption syncs with my Fitbit app. You see, I’ve been trying really hard to lose weight and slim down as I approach 45 years old this month. When I’m doing really well exercising and eating healthier, the more water I drink the better for me. Perhaps just like me, you’ve heard that we should be drinking somewhere between eight to ten cups of water a day. While that may work for an average person, I’m not an average person. At 6’2″ and about 210 pounds (down 11 pounds in six weeks), I need to drink more water than most. One of the cool features of the Hidrate Spark Water Bottle is the water consumption recommendations will vary based on height, weight, outdoor conditions (think hotter days, more water) and exercise. But let me digress for a moment. The Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle was first water-birthed (see what I did there) at the Carlson School of Management by a gaggle of entrepreneurial students. After a highly successful Kickstarter, production began. I believe I placed my order on their website during the fall of 2015 and about six month later I was notified my bottle was on its way. The Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle was very easy to set up. First, you’ll need to download their app. I have an iOS phone. Once the app is downloaded, make sure your Bluetooth is turned on. Open the app and add a new bottle. Google drive for mac/pc is going away soon. Google also points out that you may soon see messages notifying you that 'Drive for Mac/PC is going away,' presumably to join Google Reader and others in the great App Graveyard. Google Drive the service isn’t going anywhere. You can still access it from the web, smartphone apps, and either of the software options mentioned below. Google said it will stop supporting the Drive app for Macs and PCs on December 11, and the Drive app will simply stop working on March 12, 2018. Also, the best wording would have been: 'Google Drive application is being replaced by Backup & Sync for Google Drive' since it's only that version of the client side app that is 'going away', not the service and Cloud Storage space. The sensor stick should already be attached to your bottle (more on the sensor stick in a bit). Make sure you hold your phone next to the cap, because this where the batteries are located in the sensor stick. Within a few moments, your Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle should be paired to your phone. Calibration is pretty easy. Simply fill the bottle with water and place on a flat surface to calibrate. Track how much water you drink and be reminded of when to hydrate with the Hidrate Spark 2.0 Water Bottle. A sensor in the bottle syncs via Bluetooth to the Hidrate app in your smartphone and/or your fitness tracker for optimum daily hydration. When I first used my bottle, which is BPA-free, it did smell rather plasticky; however, the smell didn’t impact the taste of the water which was great. For the first several weeks after receiving my Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle, things were working pretty well. Outside of an occasional sync issue or an app bug or three, I loved the simplicity of no longer having to log my water consumption, especially with the integration with Fitbit. I was averaging about 120 ounces of water a day and in fact, one day I topped over 200 ounces and received a warning message in the app that said something like, “Whoa Sailor, slow down. You’re consuming too much water.” That’s pretty cool. So with all the things that I love about the Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle, why is it that I don’t like it? Frankly, because I’ve had not one, but two sensor sticks fail on me in the past two months. The first failure came about two or so weeks into using the Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle. You see, there are two batteries inside the cap of the sensor stick which is inside the water bottle. When there is water, things get wet. My first water bottle had to be sent back after about a week of going back and forth with customer service for this small company. Speaking of which, customer service, although slower than I’d like, is excellent. They sent me a free shipping label and about two weeks later I received my replacement bottle. And here is an interesting thing that happened while I awaited my replacement bottle: my water consumption dramatically went down. After two-week without my Hidrate Spark Smart Water Bottle, I was feeling parched on my replacement bottle arrived. Alas, after about another two weeks, my second sensor stick failed. This time, it took about three weeks to get resolved and I believe when I get back from my holiday weekend, my new sensor stick is waiting for me. So in the meantime, I’ve been logging my water consumption the old-fashioned way, by using the app. It’s really easy to just give it a tap. Therefore without further ado, here is my poetic review: If you like to drink water perhaps H2O, then the Hidrate Spark is the way to go. But be patient with their app, don’t get frustrated and stay on track. For if you do you’ll be just like me, going to the loo but feeling healthy. I ordered 2 of these for Christmas for my wife and daughter (wife really wanted it). I did not really look into it before I bought it. I just thought if you really like it and it will get you to drink more water, fine.
