Microsoft merged MSN Messenger with Skype in April 2013. If your company merged its Skype and Messenger contacts, you must now log in to Skype using your Microsoft login information in order to see an updated list containing both your Skype and Messenger contacts. Other issues apart from the Messenger-Skype migration can also cause problems when trying to update contacts. Several potential solutions exist, including upgrading Skype, manually re-synchronizing contacts, and restoring contacts online or from a backup file. Upgrade Skype If, after logging in to Skype using your Microsoft username, you're still having trouble getting your contacts to update, the first and simplest solution is to upgrade Skype to the most recent version available for your operating system. If there is a bug in your current version preventing contacts from updating, for example, chances are Skype has addressed this problem in a subsequent version of the application. Manually Re-Sync Contacts If you've upgraded Skype and your contacts still won't update, you can try re-synchronizing them manually. To delete this database file, sign out of Skype and quit the application. Press 'Windows-R' on your keyboard to launch the Run prompt. Enter '%appdata% Skype' (without quotation marks) into the Run prompt and press 'Enter.' Click the folder that has the same name as your Skype username. Delete the 'eas.db' file in this folder. Launch Skype, sign in again using your Microsoft account and your contacts should update automatically. Restore Deleted Contacts Online If you accidentally deleted contacts, Skype won't be able to update your contact list until you restore those contacts online. To restore deleted contacts, sign out of Skype and quit the application. Navigate to the Outlook website (link in Resources) and sign in with your Microsoft account. Click the 'Manage' menu and click 'Restore deleted contacts.' Select the contacts you want to restore, and then click 'Restore.' When the contacts are added back onto your contact list, click each of them, click 'Manage' and then click 'Invite to Messenger.' Log out of your account, sign in to Skype and the contacts will be updated once the individuals accept your invitation. Restore Contacts From Backup File If you've recently moved to a new computer or a new version of Skype and are having trouble getting Skype to update your contacts, you can restore your contacts manually from a backup file, if one exists. To do this, launch Skype and log in to the account for which you want to restore contacts. Click 'Contacts' on the main menu, highlight 'Advanced,' and then click 'Restore Contacts from File.' Browse to your backup file, click it, and then click 'Open' to restore your contacts.
